The FE 135 mm f / 1.8 GM from Sony, appreciated for its ability to isolate the focus, is a medium telephoto device characterized by its bright and sophisticated design. The maximum aperture of f / 1.8 excels in low light conditions and also offers greater control over depth of field to work with selective focusing techniques. The advanced optical design incorporates two extra low dispersion elements, including a Super ED element, to reduce chromatic aberrations and an XA element (extreme aspherical), which significantly controls spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and clarity of the image. In addition, a Nano AR coating has been applied to limit the phantom effect and the lens flare to increase contrast and color fidelity when working under intense lighting conditions.

Complementing the optical assets, this lens is also notable for its inclusion of a circular 11-blade diaphragm to produce soft, soft-edge bokeh with selective-focus images. To control the focus, an XD linear motor system is used that is fast and quiet, and also provides more sensitive control for manual focus operation. The lens also has a sealed design against dust and moisture to admit shooting in adverse conditions and dedicated buttons to maintain focus, the AF / MF switch and the manual aperture ring provide greater control during shooting.

Two customizable focus retention buttons are present in the lens cylinder for intuitive touch control and quick access to the selected setting.
The physical aperture ring can be pressed for a smooth and quiet opening change for the benefit of video applications.
