Its hybrid construction is optimized to produce professional results, whether handheld on the sidelines or balanced on a stabilizer.

Construction and optical design
The lens's internal focusing and zoom construction optimizes it for those who shoot videos and want to mount it on a stabilizer. Two Nano USM floating motors drive the Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus and can operate independently of each other, resulting in fast and silent autofocus that also benefits video. The construction also suppresses focus breathing, maintaining image integrity as it moves through the zoom range, and a manual, lockable iris ring ensures exposure integrity while shooting.
Optically, the lens features 18 elements in 15 groups, incorporating two ultra-low dispersion elements, another ultra-low dispersion element to minimize chromatic aberrations, and three additional aspherical lenses to ensure maximum edge-to-edge image quality. Canon's Air Sphere and Super Spectra coatings are applied to the front element to reduce ghosting and flare, while a fluorine coating repels oil and water to protect the lens.
