24.2 MP Exmor APS-C CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor

The 24.2 MP APS-C format Exmor CMOS sensor delivers consistent and nuanced image quality with minimal noise and high sensitivity of ISO 100-32000, which can be expanded to ISO 102400 for working in low-light conditions. The sensor features a unique design that uses fine copper wiring, enhanced circuit processing, and an improved front-end LSI to increase light-gathering capabilities, reduce noise, and increase readout speeds to benefit video recording. The combination of sensor and BIONZ X processor also offers a maximum continuous shooting speed of 11 fps with AF and AE, or up to 8 fps with a silent shutter, and allows for 14-bit unprocessed file output for a wide tonal and color scale.

UHD 4K video recording in XAVC S format

  • It is possible to internally record UHD 4K video at multiple frame rates of up to 30 fps using the full width of the sensor with 8-bit 4:2:0 color sampling using the XAVC S codec at 100 Mbps.

  • It is also possible to make 4K recordings with oversampling, which use a 6K capture area within the Super 35 area to achieve a higher level of detail. This full pixel readout does not include pixel binning to achieve higher quality images with less moiré and aliasing.

  • The a6400 offers extensive customizable controls for color and gamma, allowing users to adjust gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more. It uses the same S-Log2 gamma curve found in high-end Sony Cinema cameras, compressing up to 1300% more dynamic range into the video signal than traditional Rec. 709, for greater post-production flexibility. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) compatibility is also available, along with the BT.2020 color space, to record within a wide range of colors. In addition to S-Log2, S-Log3 is also available to produce an effective dynamic range of 14 stops with greater gradation control in the shadow to midtone regions of the image.

  • In addition to the internal high-resolution recording, the uncompressed HDMI output also allows the use of an optional external recorder for clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 sampling.

  • The interval shooting mode is ideal for creating time-lapse movies with the help of Imaging Edge software. Intervals between 1 and 60 seconds can be selected to record up to 9,999 sequential frames.
  • 4K video recording also allows for the production of 8MP still images during playback by taking a screenshot of a movie and saving it as a separate file.
  • The Slow & Quick (S&Q) mode allows users to capture videos in Full HD at specific steps between 1 and 120 fps. These settings will enable you to slow down the action and speed up a slow-motion scene.

4D FOCUS

The powerful 4D FOCUS system, which covers almost the entire sensor area, incorporates 425 phase-detection points on the chip along with 425 contrast-detection areas to achieve precise focus in just 0.02 seconds. The focus point density of this hybrid AF system also enables high-density tracking AF technology, which is ideal for tracking moving subjects in a variety of lighting conditions.

  • The real-time Eye autofocus can be used to focus on the eyes of recognized human subjects for portraits and is available in both AF-S and AF-C modes, for both photos and videos.

  • The AF Eye can also be used when photographing animals and with any focus mode when taking pictures.

  • The autofocus with lock maintains focus on moving subjects by using a configurable frame that is set over the desired moving subject.
  • Expand Flexible Spot uses neighboring focus points to maintain focus on moving subjects even if the originally selected point loses focus.
  • The focus magnifier function can be used to achieve critical focus by concentrating on minute details of the subject.
  • The rear touchscreen can be used for touch focus control and touch tracking, and a touchpad focus control mode allows you to intuitively use the rear screen while keeping your eyes on the viewfinder.
  • In addition to autofocus, the a6400 also features a Peaking MF function to enhance manual focus control by highlighting sharp contrast edges for a more objective way of achieving sharp focus.

Body design and connectivity

  • The 2.36 million-dot OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder provides a bright and high-resolution means for eye-level monitoring.

  • The 3.0" 921.6k-dot LCD touchscreen can be tilted 180° upwards or 74° downwards to work from high and low angles. The screen also incorporates White Magic technology with an RGBW pixel structure to increase brightness and allow use in natural lighting conditions.

  • The touchscreen design provides access to Touch Focus control for immediate selection of the focus point, as well as a touchpad function that allows you to smoothly and intuitively select a focus point on the screen while looking through the viewfinder.

  • The integrated 3.5 mm microphone ports provide greater control over the audio during video recording.
  • The included NP-FW50 rechargeable lithium-ion battery has a rated capacity of approximately 410 shots per charge when working with the LCD screen or 360 shots when using the viewfinder.
  • In addition to the battery, the a6400 can also be powered via a USB connection to a computer or a mobile phone's battery. This connection can also be used to charge the battery.
  • The built-in Wi-Fi connection allows the a6400 to instantly share images with mobile devices for direct online sharing on social networks, via email, and on cloud storage sites. It is also compatible with NFC (Near Field Communication), which enables one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex setup is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.
  • Bluetooth connectivity allows for the acquisition of location data.

Sony E PZ 16-50 mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II Lens (Sony E, black)

Designed for APS-C mirrorless camera sensors, the Sony E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II lens in black offers a versatile full-frame equivalent zoom range of 24-75mm in a compact design. A variable aperture from f/3.5 to 5.6 helps keep the lens size and weight to a minimum while accommodating most use cases. When the camera is turned off, the lens retracts to just 1.25 inches.

The fast autofocus and enhanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization counteract hand-held camera movement to achieve sharper images. Four aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element ensure high-resolution images throughout the zoom range. The lens supports autofocus while shooting at a speed of up to 120 fps and autofocus while zooming, allowing intuitive filming with a single person and moving subjects.
