24.5 MP partially stacked CMOS sensor
The Z6 III is Nikon's first camera featuring a partially stacked sensor design for faster scans and readouts than its predecessor, as well as reducing rolling shutter. Additionally, this sensor design unlocks many of the camera's flagship-level features, such as faster autofocus, a smoother EVF experience, faster continuous shooting speeds, and higher frame rates when recording video.

EXPEED 7 image processor
Complementing the sensor is the EXPEED 7 processing engine, which is found in the high-end Z8 and Z9 mirrorless cameras and offers speeds approximately 10 times faster than the Z6II. This engine works in conjunction with the partially stacked sensor design to achieve impressively fast AF speeds, burst shooting speeds, high buffer capacity, smooth video performance, and quick handling in every way.

• Maximum continuous shooting speeds of 20 fps when shooting in RAW, up to 60 fps when shooting in full-frame JPEG, and 120 fps when shooting JPEG with a DX crop, with all speeds supporting full AF/AE performance.

• Capable of buffering more than 1000 images in a burst when using the electronic shutter, which means that image sequences can be recorded continuously for approximately 50 seconds.

• The pre-shot capture of up to 120 fps helps facilitate capturing decisive moments by recording burst frames for up to one second before releasing the shutter. When this feature is activated, the burst shooting will start when the shutter is pressed halfway, and the buffer will retain up to 4 seconds of frames after fully pressing the shutter.

• The electronic shutter offers a maximum shutter speed of 1/16,000 s to work in the brightest conditions with wider apertures.

• The partially stacked sensor design reduces rolling shutter distortion, so fast-moving subjects, such as a golf club, a tennis racket, or a baseball bat, do not appear distorted when working with shutter speeds of up to 1/16,000 s.

• AF calculations are performed at a speed of 120 fps to keep up with the fast continuous shooting speeds.

Phase detection AF with 493 points
Covering the entire sensor area, the flagship EXPEED 7 processor of the Z6 III unlocks Nikon's flagship 493-point phase detection AF system to achieve fast and precise focusing performance. This system benefits from the high-speed communication of the Z interface along with the sensor speed, allowing AF readings to occur at a rate of up to 120 fps.

This focus system also supports working in low-light conditions with a Starlight mode that allows focusing down to -10 EV, greatly benefiting astrophotography, concerts, and other nighttime shooting applications. With the highest native ISO in a Z series camera at ISO 64000, autofocus is also useful for working in challenging lighting conditions. The backlit AF function uses separate pixels on the sensor that allow these areas to be intentionally overexposed for focusing accuracy purposes without affecting the actual exposure of the recorded image.
The Z6 III, a fundamental focus mode in DSLRs, which debuted for mirrorless cameras with the Z9, also includes 3D tracking AF that combines with subject detection to lock onto fast and erratic subjects moving parallel and perpendicular to the camera. Additionally, there are three dynamic-area AF modes, with a range of focus area sizes, to capture a wide variety of moving subject types.

Subject detection with deep learning technology
Utilizing inherited algorithms and deep learning technology from the Z9, including sophisticated subject detection, the Z6 III can recognize a variety of distinct subject types, ranging from humans to animals, airplanes, and bicycles. When working in auto-area AF, these subjects will be automatically detected, focused on, and tracked to ensure sharp focus as the subject moves across the frame.
The eye detection AF, specifically, has been adjusted to improve accuracy and refine eye recognition in the scene and can also be used in conjunction with customized wide-area AF for different shapes and sizes of the subject.

Most beautiful portraits
Perfect for portraits, the Z6 III enhances the inherent capabilities of the partially stacked sensor with a series of processing tools and shooting functions to improve portraits:

• Portrait mode processes portraits for skin with a natural texture and a rounded feel.

• Rich Tones Portrait Mode, an image mode that produces more vivid results while capturing details of the subject's complexion and avoiding loss of detail in the highlights.

• The flat monochrome mode features smooth gradations from light to shadow, resulting in soft monochromatic portraits.

• The Deep Tone Monochrome mode selects slightly darker tones in the shadow to midtone range, and the brightness increases rapidly as the tones progress from midtones to highlights.

• Skin smoothing can be applied to up to three subjects in a shot and slightly blurs the skin for a more pleasing texture while maintaining essential sharpness in the eyes and hair.

• The manual control of white balance is more intuitive when making adjustments, and the automatic WB has also been optimized for human subjects.

• Make the most of Nikon's portrait modes by combining the Z6 III with one of Nikon's Z portrait lenses, such as the 50mm f/1.2 S, the 85mm f/1.2 S, or the 135mm f/1.8 S Plena.

Pixel Shift Technology
Produce ultra-high resolution images of up to approximately 96 megapixels using pixel shift technology. By slightly shifting the image sensor between shots, selectable between 4 and 32 shots per image, with more shots meaning more detail, users can merge the images in NX Studio after shooting to create a single image with enhanced resolution, texture, and color. This shooting method also reduces noise, moiré, and false colors. Pixel Shift photography benefits archival, landscape, architecture, fine art, macro, and film digitization applications, achieving its best results when working with a tripod.

Internal recording 6K60 and 4K 120
Equally capable for video, the Z6 III also approaches the recording capabilities of the Z9 here, with a variety of resolutions and frame rates available up to 6K.
With full pixel readout, it is possible to record 6K60p video with continuous shooting, while 4K and Full HD recording is also possible at a variety of frame rates, including full-frame 4K recording at up to 120p and Full HD recording at 240p for slow-motion playback.

N-RAW Video and ProRes RAW Video
Internal 12-bit RAW recording is supported up to 6K 60p in N-RAW format along with internal ProRES RAW HQ. RAW recording offers greater tonal and color latitude and can enhance dynamic range, benefiting color grading needs and post-production flexibility.

• N-RAW is Nikon's proprietary raw recording format that offers impressively small file sizes compared to other raw formats, as well as the ability to create MP4 proxies for more efficient preview or transfer.

• N-RAW recording is available up to 6K at 60p, and ProRes RAW is also available up to 6K at 30p.

Nikon's brightest viewfinder
The combination of sensor and processor in the Z6 III has allowed Nikon to equip the Z6 III with the brightest electronic viewfinder in any of its cameras. At 4000 nits, it is 33% brighter than the flagship Z9, making subject details visible even in full sunlight. Its resolution of 5.760.000 points is also a first for a Nikon electronic viewfinder, as it aids with autofocus by displaying the subject recognition square. This electronic viewfinder also features a high fps function, which increases the electronic viewfinder's refresh rate to 120 fps for smoother and more realistic viewing. Lastly, the electronic viewfinder of the Z6 III also boasts a higher dynamic range and is compatible with a DCI-P3 color gamut, the first of its kind in a mirrorless camera, to approximate real-world color when taking a photo.

170° variable angle LCD screen
The Z6 III features a unique 3.2" touchscreen LCD with 2.1 million dots and a 170° variable angle mobility to facilitate work from high and low angles, whether shooting in horizontal or vertical orientation. This allows for easier viewing from a variety of positions, and the user interface orientation will also change depending on how the camera is held.

Body design

• The two card slots, a CFexpress Type B slot and a UHS-II SD slot, allow for flexible file storage. The CFx slot is suitable for data-intensive applications, such as 6K recording and high-speed burst shooting, while the SD slot maintains compatibility with the popular storage format. Additionally, the CFx B slot is also compatible with XQD memory cards.
