Compact and capable, theNikon Z 5It is a mirrorless FX-format camera with a full set of features to meet the needs of photography and video. Its 24.3MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 6 processor offer a wide sensitivity to ISO 51200, fast shooting at 4.5 fps, and UHD 4K video at 30 fps.

The imaging capabilities also translate into a refined autofocus system with 273 selectable points, and it is a hybrid focusing system that uses phase-detection and contrast-detection methods for precise and high-speed focusing with expert subject tracking. Face detection can be used in both still images and video mode, while more precise eye detection benefits portrait photographers working with human or animal subjects.

Complementing the sensor and processor is a sleek yet versatile physical design that includes a magnesium alloy chassis with a sealed construction to suit work in adverse weather conditions. A high-resolution 3.6 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder allows for high-resolution eye-level viewing, while a rear 3.2" 1.04m-dot tilting touchscreen LCD allows for working from high and low angles. Additionally, for easy sharing, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity work in conjunction with the Nikon SnapBridge app to wirelessly transfer photos and videos and remotely control the camera from your mobile device.

24.3MP FX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 6 image processor

The 24.3 MP full-frame FX-format CMOS sensor is paired with an EXPEED 6 image processor to provide a versatile blend of high sensitivity, nuanced image quality, and fast overall performance. A native sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200 allows for working in a wide variety of lighting conditions and can be further expanded to ISO 102400 for extreme low-light conditions. The combination of sensor resolution and size also contributes to clean image quality and smooth color transitions with reduced noise throughout the sensitivity range. In addition to benefiting image quality, the EXPEED 6 processor also offers useful speed throughout the camera system, including a maximum resolution continuous shooting speed of 4.5 fps, as well as the ability to capture 8MP when recording video.

In addition to image capture, the sensor design also incorporates a 273-point hybrid autofocus system that uses both phase-detection and contrast-detection methods to acquire focus quickly and accurately for both video applications and still images. This focus system is compatible with eye-detection AF, which uses facial recognition to help lock focus on the subjects' eyes, along with face detection for both still images and videos, and for both humans and animals.

UHD 4K video recording

Capable of recording more than just still images, the Z 5 supports UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at up to 60 fps, with the ability to save movie files to the camera's memory cards or to an optional external recorder via HDMI output. UHD 4K recording uses a 1.7x crop from the center portion of the frame, while Full HD recording uses the entire full frame. Additionally, it is also possible to perform interval shooting in-camera with the ability to produce a finished UHD 4K video file directly from the camera.

Reduction of vibration by changing the sensor

Incorporated into the body is a 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction (VR) mechanism that compensates for up to five stops of stabilization regardless of the lens in use. This system also works with adapted lenses when using the optional FTZ adapter, where 3-axis stabilization is used. Additionally, to benefit video recording, Electronic VR is available to help keep footage steady for handheld shooting.

Body design and connectivity

• A large 3.2" LCD screen with 1.04 million dots is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live image capture. The screen features a tilting design to accommodate work from high and low angles and is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation, and setting control.

• There is an electronic viewfinder with 3.69 million dots for comfortable eye-level viewing.

• The two SD memory card slots support up to the UHS-II protocol for saving high-speed and efficient photo and video files.

• A robust magnesium alloy chassis is dust and weather resistant to benefit work in harsh climates and inclement conditions.

• Built-in SnapBridge connectivity allows for seamless transfer of low-resolution images, as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enable communication between the camera and a smart device, and additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view from the camera to facilitate remote work.

• The included EN-EL15c rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 470 shots per charge, and in-camera charging is supported via USB, even when the camera is in use. Additionally, it is also compatible with the optional MB-N10 multi-battery power pack for extended recording times.

• Focus Shift mode automatically takes a series of up to 300 sequential images while advancing the focus position with each shot. These images can be stacked into a single image with greater depth of field, making it ideal for shooting close-ups of smaller objects, as well as landscapes and other static subjects.

A stepping motor provides fast, silent, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to accommodate both still images and video applications. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment in a variety of camera and exposure settings.
