A classic telephoto zoom, refined and reinvented
With nine years of manufacturing, Sony has restructured its classic telephoto zoom with the FE 70-200mm f/4 Macro G OSS II, introducing performance improvements in autofocus, stabilization, magnification, and sharpness, while reducing both its length and size. Being a portable and everyday staple for events, sports, and portraits, this latest iteration expands its capabilities in video and macro applications.

Enhanced optical performance
The major change in the lens's optical design is the introduction of a floating focusing element, allowing the lens's high-resolution .5x "semi-macro" magnification, reducing the minimum focusing distance to 10.2" at 70mm. This increased resolution is available throughout the zoom range, as is the lens's improved edge-to-edge sharpness. The lens features aspherical, advanced aspherical, super extra-low dispersion, and extra-low dispersion elements to reduce and suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations. Nano AR Coating II controls flare and ghosting, while the nine-blade rounded diaphragm provides the lens with its smooth and creamy bokeh.

Faster autofocus optimized for video
The main improvement of the 70-200mm f/4 II is its faster autofocus system optimized for video. With 4 XD Line motors, two for each of the lens's focusing groups, the lens now operates 20% faster than its predecessor and supports focus tracking during zooming. The new autofocus system also works with the high-speed continuous shooting of 1 fps blackout-free of the Alpha 30, double the speed of the f/4 OSS I.
For those eager to apply the lens's virtues to video, Sony has introduced several features from its cinema division. The new autofocus system operates almost silently while drastically reducing focus breathing and focus shift. The linear response MF system ensures consistent and natural operation, while the full-time direct manual focus (DMF) function facilitates quick adjustments using the focus ring while in AF modes.
To round out the improvements in image quality, the lens's built-in SteadyShot optical image stabilization is designed to work in conjunction with the camera body's stabilization system to ensure sharp images when shooting handheld even at the longest focal lengths.

Redesigned for portability and durability

By reconfiguring the 70-200mm f/4 II, Sony has considered both the lens's resilience and its user's, reducing both the length and weight of the optics by 15% to 5.8" and 1.7 lb, respectively. The internal zoom mechanism minimizes front-heaviness to reduce strain during focusing, while its dust and moisture-resistant design and rubber control rings make it suitable for adverse conditions.
Other design features include:

• A removable and rotatable tripod collar for increased stability and reduced strain on the camera's lens mount.

• Three focus hold buttons and an AF / MF switch on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and quick access to selected settings.

• A three-mode optical image stabilization switch to ensure sharpness under different shooting conditions.

• A full-time DMF switch for overriding manual focus during AF-C mode.

• Zoom lock and focus range limiter switches to prevent unwanted lens extension or to restrict the usable focus range between a set limited or full range to improve focusing speed.

• A fluorine coating for the lens's front element to repel water, oil, and other contaminants and facilitate lens cleaning.
