Featuring a versatile set of functions in a particularly compact design, the Sony a6100 is a mirrorless APS-C format camera suitable for both still photography and video applications. With a 24.2MP CMOS sensor and a BIONZ X processor, it is possible to capture high-resolution still images with a wide sensitivity range and low noise level. The combination of sensor and processor also allows for UHD 4K video recording along with fast continuous shooting of up to 11 fps to work with moving subjects. Fast shooting also benefits from real-time AF and subject tracking capabilities to help ensure sharp focus on a variety of subject types.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the a6100 features an OLED electronic viewfinder of 1.44m Points for clear eye-level viewing. There is also a 3.0" 921.6k-dot LCD touchscreen available, featuring a 180° tilting design to accommodate working from high, low, and front-facing angles. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow for wireless image sharing as well as remote control of the camera from a linked mobile device.

24.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor
A revised 24.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor with APS-C format offers smooth and nuanced image quality with minimal noise and high sensitivity from ISO 100-32000, which can be expanded to ISO 51200 for working in low-light conditions. The sensor features a unique design that utilizes thin copper wiring, enhanced circuit processing, and an improved front-end LSI to increase light-gathering capabilities, reduce noise, and increase readout speeds to benefit video recording. The combination of the sensor and BIONZ X processor also offers a maximum continuous shooting speed of 11 fps with AF and AE and allows for 14-bit RAW file output for a wide tonal and color scale.

UHD 4K video recording in XAVC S format
Internal recording of UHD 4K movies is possible at multiple frame rates of up to 30 fps, and based on the Super35mm recording area and the effective 6K resolution, oversampling offers greater detail and enables full pixel readout without pixel binning, resulting in higher quality images with reduced moiré and aliasing. Full HD 1080p recording is also supported at frame rates of up to 120 fps, and both resolutions use the XAVC S format at 100 Mbps contained in an MP4 container with 4:2:0 sampling. High-speed recording at 120 fps also allows for 4x and 5x slow-motion movie recording with the frame rate set to 30p or 24p. In addition to high-resolution internal recording, uncompressed HDMI output also allows the use of an optional external recorder for clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 sampling.

4K video recording also takes advantage of the ability to produce 8MP still images during playback by taking a frame grab from a movie and storing it as a separate file.

4D FOCUS
Covering almost the entire area of the sensor, a powerful 4D FOCUS system incorporates 425 on-chip phase detection points along with 425 contrast detection areas for precise focus in just 0.02 seconds. The density of the focus points in this hybrid AF system also enables high-density AF tracking technology, which excels at tracking moving subjects under a variety of lighting conditions. Real-time Eye AF can be used to focus on the eyes of recognized subjects for portraits (human or animal) and is available for AF-S and AF-C modes. The use of phase detection points also allows for the use of A-mount lenses through optional LA-EA3 or LA-EA1 lens mount adapters with full AF compatibility.

The apt 4D FOCUS system also offers a variety of focusing functions for refined precision, including lock-on autofocus, which maintains focus on moving subjects by using a configurable frame set over the desired moving subject, and expands the flexible spot, which employs neighboring focus points to maintain focus on moving subjects, even if the originally selected point loses focus. Autofocus can also be used in conjunction with the Focus Magnifier function for critical focusing when targeting minute details of the subject.

In addition to autofocus, the a6100 also features a Peaking MF function to aid manual focus control by highlighting sharp contrast edges for a more objective means of achieving sharp focus.
