The construction of the target includes two FLD elements (''F'' low dispersion) and five SLD elements (Special low dispersion) to reduce chromatic aberrations.

To offer an ultrawide-angle lens with a focal length of 20mm and an F1.4 brightness, this lens incorporates a 59mm diameter double aspherical lens*. Lenses of this type had been considered extremely difficult to produce, but SIGMA accepted the challenge of creating an ultrawide-angle F1.4 lens that would meet the performance demands of the SIGMA Art line

This lens minimizes chromatic aberrations, a common problem in wide-angle wide aperture lenses, and features two glass elements FLD "F" Low Dispersion)* and five glass elements SLD (Special Low Dispersion) to minimize transverse chromatic aberration, which is visible resolution at the edges of the image. the optimized power distribution of the lens minimizes axial chromatic aberration. as a result, this lens offers high image quality in every situation without color mixing, and offers sharp, high-contrast performance.

Distortion is a common problem in wide-angle lenses, and cannot be corrected simply by changing the aperture value. For this reason, a lens must be designed to correct this aberration from the start. By adjusting the angle of incidence of light starting with the first optical element and incorporating optimally positioned aspherical glass elements, the SIGMA 20mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art lens minimizes distortion throughout the image.
