A lens designed for portraits, now even better.
The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II follows the acclaimed FE 85mm F1.4 GM with astounding bokeh and more resolution at any aperture thanks to the latest technology. It also supports precision and AF speed with E-mount mirrorless camera bodies. We will immediately notice its excellent features, such as its compact size and the lightness that has been achieved, which adds agility to outstanding image quality without any drawbacks. A great G Master portrait lens for maximum creative control, allowing our imagination and expertise to set the limits to the expected quality of our photographic and videographic work.
G-Master performance to another level with an even sharper bokeh
The best results are rarely the product of chance and improvised work. The design, development, and construction of the new Sony FE 85 mm F1.4 GM II mirrorless lens has been meticulous and detail-oriented. Its acclaimed results stem from an optical structure composed of 14 elements arranged in 11 groups. Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements achieve attractive resolution up to the edges, and two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements minimize chromatic distortion. Aspherical lenses are much more difficult to manufacture than simple spherical ones. The new XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements achieve an extremely high surface precision maintained at 0.01 microns through innovative manufacturing technology, offering an unprecedented combination of high resolution and the most beautiful bokeh you have ever seen. Eyes and expressions are captured with great clarity in any framing. Sony's AR II nano-coating reduces flare and ghosting under almost any lighting condition. The minimum focusing distance is just 80 cm in manual focus and 85 cm in full AF.
Bokeh that captivates with its excellent results
The acclaimed performance of the previous model has been notably and indisputably elevated, featuring new optical elements aimed at controlling chromatic distortion to achieve a more natural bokeh. The 11-blade circular aperture also contributes to achieving such results, while the XA (extreme aspherical) elements and controlled spherical distortion reduce circular bokeh to achieve smooth transitions from sharp focus even at a maximum aperture of F1.4. Spherical distortion in lenses is like a light passing through a shrill music, rays projected through a simple spherical lens. This is caused by the different ways in which rays are refracted in different parts of the lens, which can diminish the sharpness of images captured by lenses with wide apertures, and F1.4 is one of these. However, the solution to this distortion lies in the strategic introduction of aspherical elements near the diaphragm. These aspherical elements work by precisely realigning the wayward rays in the image plane, preserving definition and contrast at all times, even when the aperture is wide open.
Fast, accurate, and silent AF function to be ideal in cinematic environments.
The XD (extreme dynamic) linear motor has been developed to offer more drive and efficiency than previous models and to maximize the constant increase in speed of current and future camera bodies. The design of the linear motor and its components has been carefully reviewed to achieve significantly higher drive. With 2 XD linear motors and high-speed control, the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II offers up to three times the AF speed of the previous model. Tracking moving subjects is up to 7 times better, with reliable captures with a minimalist depth of field of F1.4. It seamlessly supports the 120 fps of the new Alpha 9 III with its global shutter. The new FE 85mm F1.4 GM II offers great creative control for portrait photography.
Ideal for cinema
The new Sony original FE 85mm F1.4 GM II mirrorless lens is ideal for shooting main subjects. It works with real-time AF recognition on Alpha series bodies to offer fast, precise, and silent subject tracking, maintaining sharp focus even at its maximum F1.4 aperture. The focal length variation is minimal, but it supports compensation for any that may occur. The operation of the clickless aperture ring and Linear Response MF allows for intuitive and smooth control of what will be one of our most decisive tools to exponentially elevate the quality of our cinematic content. The iris/aperture ring provides the immediacy and responsiveness professionals need, both for still photography and video recording. Additionally, the on/off click switch allows the aperture ring stops to be activated or deactivated based on needs. Activating the stops provides tactile feedback that can aid in measuring the ring adjustment, making it a good choice for still photography. When the stops are deactivated, the aperture ring moves smoothly and silently, providing continuous and silent control for video production..
