Micro Four Thirds BSI Live MOS Sensor

The newly designed 20.4 MP Micro Four Thirds Live MOS sensor features a stacked BSI design that offers improved readout speeds, noise levels, and a greater dynamic range than previous designs. This sensor structure enhances noise performance by two stops and dynamic range by one stop to improve image quality, especially at higher ISO values.

TruePic X processor

Compared to processors from the previous generation, TruePic X offers processing speeds 3 times faster along with a sensor readout speed of 120 fps for quicker and more responsive shooting. The processor also contributes to a wide ISO range and fast continuous shooting rates.

• Native sensitivity range of ISO 200-102400, expandable to ISO 80.

• Continuous shooting of up to 10 fps with full-time AF/AE and a buffer of 169 raw frames when working with a mechanical shutter.

• If you work with a silent electronic shutter, it's possible to shoot at 20 fps with continuous AF/AE and a buffer of 108 RAW frames. SH1 and SH2 are blackout-free high-speed shooting modes, offering rates of up to 120 fps without AF/AE in SH1 and 50 fps with AF/AE in SH2.

• The Pro Capture mode starts recording before you release the shutter; capable of recording at 120 fps with fixed focus or 50 fps with continuous AF, this mode begins recording once the shutter button is pressed halfway and then stops when the button is fully pressed. Up to 70 additional frames can be recorded with this mode, providing a safeguard for moments when the action happens just before you press the shutter button.

Cross Quad Pixel AF and AI detection

With a unique design, the on-sensor phase detection AF uses a Cross Quad Pixel system that effectively divides each pixel into four sub-pixels for cross-sensor performance that is more adept at focusing in challenging lighting conditions. The focusing system has 1,053 individual points, which fully cover the sensor and operate at up to 120 fps to accommodate virtually all recording methods.

Benefiting from the Cross Quad Pixel AF structure, the color and contrast information from the sensor can also be used to create a detailed depth map of the image for more refined subject detection and tracking accuracy. Using AI, this focusing system can automatically detect a variety of subject types, such as cars, motorcycles, airplanes, helicopters, trains, birds, dogs, cats, and humans, as well as faces and eyes. Compared to previous iterations of this focusing system, the enhanced processing now makes the focusing performance 2 times more accurate and 3 times faster.

Image stabilization and computational photography

5-axis image stabilization

The 5-axis in-body image stabilization compensates for up to 8 stops of camera movement, allowing the use of significantly longer shutter speeds when shooting handheld. This advanced sensor-shift system compensates for 7 stops of camera movement with just the body, and an additional stop is provided when selected lenses with IS enabled are attached.

Handheld Assist is based on this stabilization technology to achieve more stable framing, which is especially useful when working with longer focal length lenses. The additional in-body image stabilization also contributes to a variety of shooting modes and additional camera functions, including high-resolution shooting modes, handheld live composite, and an advanced dust reduction system.

Creative shooting modes

•         High-resolution shotBenefiting from the stacked sensor design, processing power, and image stabilization system, this mode combines a series of 12 shots into a single higher resolution frame in just 5 seconds. The Tripod High Res Shots mode produces an 80 MP raw file, and the Handheld High Res Shot mode produces a 50 MP raw file, with both modes offering up to 2 stops of reduced noise and enhanced color information.

•         Live ND: now compatible with up to ND64 (6 stops), this unique feature digitally simulates the effects of an optical neutral density filter to produce long exposure/slow shutter speed effects.

•         Composed live: perfect for long exposures, night shots, and light painting applications, this unique mode gradually creates an exposure over time without overexposing key elements within the frame. This mode works to record only newly detected light sources over time and allows for live view monitoring as an image develops. A portable Live Composite mode is also available.

•         Focus stacking:This mode automatically captures 15 sequential frames while slightly changing the focus plane between each frame, then combines these exposures into a single image that exhibits an extended depth of field.

• DCI/UHD 4K video recording supports up to 60p and 10-bit 4:2:0 sampling. Full HD recording is possible at speeds of up to 240 fps for slow-motion playback.

• The 12-bit raw output is supported through the micro-HDMI port when working with a compatible optional external recorder, such as the Atomos Ninja V or Ninja V+.

• The HLG picture mode allows for HDR recording in the camera, and an OM-Log gamma provides a greater range of color grading when adjusting the footage in post-production.

•         Time-lapse production is possible in the camera, up to UHD 4K with frame rates from 5 fps to 30 fps.

• The 3.5 mm microphone and headphone ports contribute to greater control and quality of audio recording.

• The electronic viewfinder features a 5.76-million-dot OLED panel, providing a bright and clear means for eye-level control. The viewfinder has an equivalent magnification of 0.83x, a 21 mm eyepoint, and a refresh rate of 120 fps for realistic motion reproduction.

• The 3.0" LCD touchscreen with 1.62 million dots features a vari-angle design with 270° of rotation to accommodate working from high, low, and front-facing angles.

• The durable and lightweight magnesium alloy body design is dust and splash resistant with an IP53 rating for guaranteed use in adverse weather conditions.

• The robust design is also freeze-proof tested for reliable use at temperatures as low as 14 °F.

• The durable shutter design is rated for 400,000 shutter actuations.

• Using the new BLX-1 battery, the OM-1 is rated for 520 shots per charge. In-body battery charging is possible through the USB Type-C port, and the camera can also be powered with a USB-connected power bank.

• Dual slots for UHS-II SD memory cards for flexible file storage, including backing up in-camera, splitting file types, or simply having additional memory on hand for extra storage.

• The updated menu configuration makes it easier to find different settings, confirm configuration selections, and understand why grayed-out items cannot be selected.

• Separate AEL and AF-ON buttons for easier and more direct control over different functions. Both buttons can also be customized to adjust different settings.

• Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (5 and 2.4 GHz) allow for wireless file transfer and remote camera control through the OI.Share app for mobile devices.
