Designed within the rigorous tolerances of a cinema lens, the Nikon Sigma 40 mm f / 1.4 DG HSM artistic lens with F mount is a wide lens of normal length characterized by a brilliant design and a sophisticated optical design. The fast maximum aperture of f / 1.4 helps achieve effects of shallow depth of field and selective focus, and also adapts to work in difficult lighting conditions. The optical design incorporates a series of low dispersion elements and aspherical elements, which help improve sharpness and clarity by controlling spherical and chromatic aberrations. A super multilayer coating is also offered, which helps minimize reflections and shadows for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in bright lighting conditions.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic engine to produce fast, smooth and silent autofocusing performance with full-time manual focus override. The physical design features a brass bayonet mount, which offers rigidity and precision mounting together with a seal to protect against dust and moisture. In addition, a rounded nine-leaf diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Short-normal prime is designed for Nikon F-mount cameras in FX format, however, it is also suitable for DX models where it provides an equivalent focal length of 60 mm.

The optical design includes three F Low Dispersion (FLD) elements and three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements, which help reduce color fringes and chromatic aberrations to improve clarity and color accuracy.
An aspheric element is used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contributes to overall sharpness and accurate representation.

A super multilayer coating has been applied to the lens elements to minimize the reflection and ghost image of the lens and contribute to producing contrast-rich and neutral-color images, even in backlight conditions.

The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) performs a fast and silent autofocus, which is complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also allows manual full-time focus control by simply turning the focus ring at any time.

The specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater stability of exposure control which is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting speeds.
